What's happening at The Makini Bar?

What is Sho Chu?

SHOCHU, pronounced "show-chew," is a colorless, Japanese spirit, which is a distilled version of Sake, the Japanese rice wine. Widely served in Korea (Soju, as pronounced in Korean), China, and Japan, SHOCHU is the number one selling spirit in the world. When scripted in Chinese characters, its direct literal translation is "fiery spirits," which indicates SHOCHU's high level of potency as an alcohol beverage. Its appeal is attributed greatly to manufacturers' efforts in refining their brewing techniques to yield a product less expensive than whisky, a great mixer and low calorie (around 35 calories per 2 oz ), along with a reputed hangover-free benefit for the over-indulger. Signed into California state legislation by the governor (SB1710), effective January 1, 1999:Ê on-sale liquor license holder authorized to sell beer & wine may also sell Soju, an imported alcoholic beverage containing no more than 24% alcohol by volume and is derived from agricultural products.
